H. Martin Smith Family: 2017 Outstanding Family

Please join us in honoring the H. Martin Smith family as AFP Advancement Northwest’s 2017 Outstanding Philanthropic Family on Thursday, Nov. 2 at the organization’s annual National Philanthropy Day luncheon.

The Smith family's leadership and generosity has shaped the City of Seattle tremendously over the past 150 years. The late H. Martin Smith, Jr. founded one of the Pacific Northwest’s largest and most successful property management and commercial brokerage firms in the mid-1970s – about one century after his ancestors arrived on a whaling ship from Norway. One of his great-grandfathers purchased Alki Point from Doc Maynard in the late 1800s. Another served as Seattle’s 12th mayor from 1880 to 1882.

“Whether it's education, art, health, human services, or the environment, the Smiths care deeply about Seattle and its people. …

“The (Smith) family contributes their time and money to dozens of local organizations,” including the Seattle Art Museum, University of Washington Foundation, Seattle Waterfront Board, The Alliance for Pioneer Square, Yakama Nation, the Seattle Humane Society, Forterra and the Metropolitan Improvement District.

Seattle Goodwill

“We teach each generation to take care of this city and respect it. My grandfather always wanted to help people. It was in his DNA. What got him excited was helping people who wanted to help themselves.”

Broderick Smith, Grandson of H. Martin Smith, Jr.
