We're here to support your career and leadership growth!

Thank you for your interest in AFP Advancement Northwest’s scholarship program, running January-December of 2018! Our goal is to create a thriving community of leaders who fundraise. We award scholarships each year, focusing on diversity in any form and giving preference to applicants from diverse populations that are underrepresented in the profession. At AFP Advancement Northwest, diversity encompasses race, ethnicity, gender, religion, physical ability, age, geography, sexual orientation, gender identity & expression, and income.

No matter where you are in your fundraising career, we encourage you to apply for a scholarship. If you’re eager for the opportunity to engage in the sector and work with colleagues to foster your own leadership ability as well as your peers’, please consider applying to this program. We're looking to create a single scholarship cohort with both early-career fundraisers (with 0-2 years in the field) and mid-career fundraisers (with 2+ years in the field).

Key benefits of our scholarship program include*:

  1. One-year membership to AFP Advancement Northwest and AFP International.
  2. Admission to our third annual two-day Forum on Strategic Fundraising in June 2018.
  3. Admission to our Essentials, Leading Edge, or Northwest Washington Igniting Philanthropy Series’ that align with our early-career and mid-career scholarship tracks or your geographic area.
  4. Admission to the 2018 National Philanthropy Day.
  5. Admission to our two social events (August and December) and Martini Monday programs.
  6. Cohort socials, the first will be held on January 12th to kick off the 2018 scholarship program.
  7. Opportunity to apply for the Advancement NW Chamberlain Scholarship, which allows one Advancement Northwest member per year to attend next year's AFP International Fundraising Conference (date TBD and likely in mid-April/early-May 2019).
  8. Option to be paired with a fundraiser mentor for one year.

*All program dates will be updated as soon as possible so that applicants can have more complete information.

Other benefits include:

  1. Access to an extensive network of professional fundraisers and non-profit leaders, dedicated to the improvement of our sector and community.
  2. Access to a cohort of peers and an alumni network of past scholarship recipients.

Your commitment to AFP:

In order for us to ensure that you have the best experience possible, we ask that all applicants be prepared to make a full commitment to participation in programming. Our data shows that the scholars who serve on committees and attend a minimum of 75% of the carefully selected Scholarship Benefit programs have the highest rates of satisfaction and professional growth.

We ask that you carefully review these commitments and are willing and able to prioritize them. If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us prior to applying. In return for your commitment, we will provide a full year of training and networking that will inspire you and give you the skills and resources to have a greater impact on your organization/cause.

  1. Instead of requiring all applicants to pay a processing fee upon submission, we ask the selected scholarship recipients to pay a Scholarship Commitment Contribution of $25 to cover the costs of processing applications and to ensure commitment of the participant. Payment is due at the first cohort social on January 12, 2018, and can be paid individually or by a sponsoring organization.
  2. We invite you to serve as a volunteer on an AFP Advancement Northwest committee of your choice for the duration of your scholarship. Different committees have different meeting schedules and regularity of meeting. While this is not mandatory, we have found that scholars who participated on committees greatly expanded their professional networks and increased their skill levels, from communications to fundraising, and from project management to public speaking. We highly recommend taking this opportunity and are happy to help you select one that works with your schedule and area of interest.
  3. Mandatory first meeting on January 12th and attendance at the Forum for Strategic Fundraising in June 2018. Our expectation is that you will attend 75% (3/4) of the Scholarship Benefit programs carefully selected for your career and network development. Please review the above programs.

Application Process - Open from June 26 - September 30, 2017
